4D Scan » How does a 4D ultrasound scan work?Ultrasound scans use sound waves to build up a picture of the inside of the body. The ultrasound scanner has a microphone which gives off sound waves which are then reflected back and converted into an image by the ultrasound machine. 4D Scan » What is the difference between a 3D Scan and a 4D Scan?3-D scans are still pictures of the baby in three dimensions, whereas 4-D scans are moving 3-D images of the baby. The images show the outside of the baby rather than the more familiar 2D images which show an outline of the baby with the internal organs visible. 4D Scan » Are 4D Scans superior to traditional 2D Scans? From a medical point of view the benefits of 3-D and 4-D scans appear to be limited. Occasionally they can be useful in giving additional information about a known abnormality. As there are few clear medical benefits it's unlikely that these scans will replace normal 2-D scans in the near future.
There is some evidence to suggest that this type of scanning assists the bonding process between mother and baby.
